The times given are approximate, but the general format remains the same.
9.15am Children arrive
Outdoor clothing and lunch bags should be left on the coat pegs/trolley in the hallway before entering the playroom. Name cards are placed on a table near the door and children are encouraged to ‘self-register’ by putting their card on the board. A member of staff also marks the register as the children enter. Items for ‘Show and Tell’ should be placed in the appropriate box. Parents and carers are welcome into the playroom to settle their child at any activities. This is a good time to chat to staff and share any information or find out what your child is enjoying at pre-school.
9.15-9.45am Free play
Children have free choice to play with that day’s activities. There is always a variety of toys available, including craft, imaginative play area, puzzles, etc.
9.45am Show and tell / story time
At this time children are encouraged to sit down on the carpet. A short piece of music is played to signal Story Time. The date, weather and letter sound of the day will be discussed and children are encouraged to bring items for ‘Show and Tell’. The theme for this is given in advance. There is also a story before the children go back to free play.
10.00am Snack time
This may last between 30 and 40 minutes. We operate a snack bar system. Children are free to choose when to sit for a snack within this time period. Name cards are displayed so when children are ready for their snack they find their own card and use this to reserve their place at the snack table and exchange it for a snack. Once they have finished, children wash their plate and cup. A member of staff will stay with no more than six children at a time. Many personal and social skills are learned during this time and it is an excellent opportunity to promote language and communication and numeracy skills. Children soon learn to recognise their own names.
10.00 – 12.00pm Free play
Children are able to choose their activities. When the weather is good, the children have free access to our outdoor area which is supervised by a member of staff at all times. During this time there is usually a period where the whole group comes together for songs or games, often linked to the day’s theme or learning intention.
12.00pm Tidy up
Children are encouraged to help tidy up.
12.15pm Home Time
Children sit on the carpet and any pictures, letters, etc. are given out to take home. A member of staff will oversee their departure, ensuring children are returned to the adult responsible for their collection.
12.15 – 1.15pm Lunch club
Once the other children have gone home, those staying for lunch are taken to the toilet. They then collect their lunch bag and sit at the table to eat. They are encouraged to save their ‘treats’ until they have eaten a good amount of their lunch. Once they have finished, a member of staff will let them leave the table and they have an opportunity to play in the cars or look at books.
1.15pm Home time
Children sit on the carpet and any pictures, letters, etc are given out to take home. A member of staff will oversee their departure, ensuring children are returned to the adult responsible for their collection.
